WONDERFUL WEDNESDAY MOM MINUTES

Good Morning Everyone!! I don't know what it is about school starting, but I am feeling more frazzled than usual! I think it is because of the change in routine, homework (ugh!), school projects (what IS it with teachers and posterboard?) packing lunches and everything else associated with school. *Sigh*.......only 2 more years, after this school year, and all of this will just be a memory! :)

My Mother, in her infinite wisdom, has some great tips today on how to survive the new school year. She is sooooo smart!!

MOM MINUTES by Earlene

Eliminate morning stress by preparing for the day. Pack lunches, including your own (if you work outside the home), backpacks the night before and pick out clothes. Wake up in plenty of time to get a “slow poke” child ready for school.

Pre-school and school-age children should receive 10-11 hours of sleep each night. Etablish those bedtime routines, and then stick to it!

Limit children to no more than two structured activities when starting school for the year. Even the smartest, most intelligent child can get "burned out" if they are overwhelmed by doing too much.

Use a large calendar to keep track of schedules and events to help with adjustments with starting school and throughout the year.

Designate a homework corner and place for backpacks

Make a family commitment to eat dinner together (without the TV) at least three times each week. Talk to your child about school and really listen to what he/she has to say.

After typing Mom's great tips, I decided to go internet searching to find some great back-to-school lunch and snack ideas. I found this at familyfun; it has awesome lunch/after school snack ideas that I am definitely going to check out! Those cooks at southernfood.about.com really know breakfast! There are some terrific recipes here that sure beat the cold cereal/toast routine. I'm thinking that a yummy Quesadillas or breakfast burritos just might appeal to my grab-it-and-run" teens!

Anyone feeling nostalgic for school cafeteria food? No kidding....I found some great recipes at: reciperewards and, no kidding, the cherry cobbler recipe sounds alot like what the cooks at my high school used to make. All I can say is YUM!!!

**Francis, your cherry recipe is still WAY BETTER though!! And, no, Helene, you cannot add blueberries to it!! HA!! LOL :)

I really could not find any awesome School Night Suppers....Anyone have any good ones that they would like to share??

As always, I hope you all have a wonderful day!!

  1. "(what IS it with teachers and posterboard?)" This made me laugh so hard. I was luck and bought a bunch of posterboard when it was on sale for $.09 at Walgreens. I just hope I have enough!
Tell mom thank you as usual they are wonderful!

  3. Awesome timing. I just took your boy to meet his new teacher this morning. Cranky butt is back home now. He is in a special ed class at the same school his uncle who cares for him did his special ed at that age almost 30 years ago.

Yikes I see I even have my own label on here now.

Thanks for those food links as my choices are $2.75 a day for his school lunches or sending something. And I still have plenty of blueberries left, thank you very much!

  4. Awe...I hope that maybe after a little rest, my boy is all happy and laughy again! My teen daughter has been in special ed classes her whole school career, and it definitely makes a difference if they have a good, patient teacher!

Yep....Since you are Mom's #1 fan, I made you your own label! :)

    Aren't school lunches outrageous?? Teen daughter packs her lunch, so those food links are going to come in very handy for me, as she gets tired of the same-old, same-old. Teen son eats his lunch at school, but that's okay. He likes the food (most of the time), but teen daughter would get sick when she ate it. Go Figure! :}

  5. Your mom is very wise. I especially like the one about not overloading the kids--too many people do that. And lunches--we do those at night. Yikes, this is a busy time of year, isn't it??

How is your band show?? I hope you will be posting a video by the end of the season. Our first football game is Friday!!

  6. Hi Lin! The kids have the 1st part of the show memorized, and they are going to perform it at the football game this Friday. I can't wait to see how much they have improved since Band Camp! Our first competition isn't until Sept. 26th (I think), so they still have time to get the rest of the show "down pat!"

How is everything going your way??
